Hunt Debrief #2 - Auckland

Hunt Debrief #2 - Auckland
Coin found on 1 November 2014, at 12:01PM by Denis & Nicole

After striking out on the weather in Wellington, I'm glad I finally managed to pick a good day for the weather! I was so busy relaxing in the warm sun outside I almost missed the coin being found!

In this hunt debrief, you'll find out the answers to the clues I posted on twitter, the coin's location, the winners, plus the chance to flex your clue solving skills with a bunch of unused clues!

The Clues - Solutions and Explanations
#theHunt_AKL Clue 1 » This little island looks like a giant, colourful barcode from above. It's the west edge of the search zone.
Te Wero Island is a small island wharf, part of Viaduct Harbour and connected to the Wynyard Crossing. If you look at it in a satellite image (on Google Maps, for example), the lines painted on the ground look like a barcode.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 2 » Shoutout to @lordemusic! If you see her tonight you would have gone too far east.
The night the hunt was taking place, Lorde was performing at Vector Arena.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 3 » If you walk too far north you'll fall into the water. The coin isn't in the water because it can't swim.
Since most of the clues were based on the Auckland CBD, I decided that the Waitemata Harbour would form a natural boundary.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 5 » Remember where @BreakfastSam was on Friday morning? I'm about 250m away. http://ow.ly/i/7qpME
On Halloween morning, TVNZ's "Breakfast" was holding their live weather crosses from outside Britomart Station. The included picture was intended as a "Where am I?" clue (similar to Clue 5 of Hunt #1).
The more astute of you may have noticed that this clue is out of order. This was a mistake on my part - I forgot to select the option to schedule the post for later, and ended up accidentally posting the clue immediately!
#theHunt_AKL Clue 4 » Chris, Rachel and TK don't actually work on this street. Find Box 2222 and it's the south edge of the search zone.
Chris, Rachel and TK are all characters from "Shortland Street", which is also a real street in Auckland City (although there isn't actually a hospital on it).
"Box 2222" refers to a PO Box, and so the Shortland Street PostShop is the south boundary.

At this point enough clues were released to lead the winners to the coin. The remaining clues I was intending to post that day are written below.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 6 » This landmark is over 100 years old. You could say it's on a "key" street.
The first half of the clue requires no explanation; "key" street refers to Quay Street, the main street running along the waterfront, and the closest street to the coin.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 7 » If you live in Devonport you could probably come and find the coin in about 15 minutes.
To get to the city from Devonport in 15 minutes, you'd need to take the ferry. So the coin is close to the Auckland Ferry Terminal.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 8 » Picture clue! Say what you see.
The clue should be read as SHED + TEN (Roman numeral) + QUEENS + WAR + F.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 9 » Binary for two. It used to be Party Central.
The number 10 is binary for two, "Party Central" refers to a designation given to the building during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Answer - The Coin's Location
If you didn't/couldn't solve the first nine clues yourself, the tenth clue will always tell you exactly where the coin is. This hunt, the coin was hidden outside Shed 10, Queens Wharf.

Congratulations to Denis & Nicole for being the winners of The Hunt - Auckland!

Twitter Practice Clues
Here are the answers to the practice clues released on Twitter before the hunt.
Where in Auckland is RANK DEEP?
"RANK DEEP" is an anagram of Eden Park.
» Albert's hands
This clue refers to the hands of the Floral Clock in Albert Park.

The Hunt #3
Well that's the end of the second of the two "pilot" instalments of The Hunt, and judging by the fact that both coins were found, I'm considering them both a success.
I'd love to do a third one, in fact. I have a bunch of clue ideas I'd like to try... and if the quick solve of Hunt #2 is any indication, I may need to increase the difficulty a tad.
I have no plans to travel outside Auckland at this current time, however if I find myself elsewhere in New Zealand, I'd definitely like to hold another hunt!
So for now, the next hunt will be held in Auckland again, sometime near January.
But if I decide to hold one earlier, or in another location, make sure you're following @hunt_clues on Twitter for the latest announcements!

So long for now.
