Hunt Debrief #4 - Auckland

Hunt Debrief #4 - Auckland
Coin found on 21 February 2015, at 12:28PM by Tahlia, Melody, Ashmeeta & Chloe

This is the story of how four girls from out East "looking for something interesting to do" on a Saturday, ended up finding this hunt's coin first after getting confused by my sneak peek image (which wasn't even a clue!), right before the rain set in on another humid summer day. Join us as we relive that Saturday's clues!

The Clues - Solutions and Explanations
#theHunt_AKL Clue 1 » It was opened over 80 years ago.
I started with quite a vague clue. This was more of an icebreaker to get everyone thinking. But it might of at least limited your search area to the older parts of Auckland.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 2 » Puzzle Clue! @PhilKeoghan has been to some amazing places; which ones don't match up? http://ow.ly/Jowoy
Time for The Hunt's first ever puzzle clue! I decided to make the puzzle a little difficult and published it near the start so that if you managed to solve it, you'd have a little bit of a head-start against the other teams; but if you couldn't, no big deal... there were more clues coming.
So here's how you solve it:
If you take a look at the top of the document, you'll notice it looks a little bit like the top of an email. But it's not a real email address! The email is 'from' t.hall@aotea.sq, which refers to Town Hall at Aotea Square. Teams that went to Town Hall might have noticed the international flags hanging on the side of the building representing the different consulates in Auckland. These ones.

If you went through the group of flags crossing out the ones that matched up to a flag on Town Hall, you'd end up with 13 flags left over. Taking the first letter of each of the flags gave you the clue: "NEAR AKL MUSEUM". [Answer]
Easter Egg 1 - Yes, the American version of The Amazing Race has been to all of the countries in this puzzle. Knowing that was not necessary.
Easter Egg 2 - The mathematically inclined puzzle solver might have noticed that the unmatched flags were in the prime-numbered spaces; 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, etc. This was a way for me to remember where the correct flags were when I was editing the puzzle. But if you noticed this, it was a great way to check your working!
#theHunt_AKL Clue 3 » This area has hosted an annual event for the last 21 years. @JohnJCampbell and @broodsmusic were both here.
The annual event in question is Christmas in the Park. This should have got you to search towards Auckland Domain.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 4 » Presenting The Hunt's first ever special guest clue reader, @BreakfastSam! http://ow.ly/JoBt5
Another Hunt first - the Video Clue!
The clue given was "Where in Auckland is it always winter, but always 28°C?". This was quite on the nose in terms of giving away the location, but the "winter" refers to the Wintergardens.

#theHunt_AKL Clue 5 » Get out your bus timetables - today's search zone is the area surrounded by a green bus. http://ow.ly/i/8J5nX
Once again, it's the traditional (if you count four times as "traditional") Clue 5 picture clue! This was the clue that led the winners right to the clue box, after a bit of awkward downwards looking, and comparing leaves.

The Unpublished Clues
#theHunt_AKL Clue 6 » :)
This clue would have come with the following picture:

This is just an aerial view of my location, that happens to look like a smiley.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 7 » What do these pictures have in common?
It's another picture clue!

This is an image of a Google Image search. If you look at all the images, you would need to figure out that I searched for "winter garden".
#theHunt_AKL Clue 8 » Wouldn't this garden make more sense if I waited until June 1?
June 1 is the calendar definition of the start of Winter. Once again I refer to a garden.
#theHunt_AKL Clue 9 » It's tropical here, but I'm still in Auckland!
The coin was hidden inside a tropical environment.

Answer - The Coin's Location
If you didn't/couldn't solve the first nine clues yourself, the tenth clue will always tell you exactly where the coin is. This hunt, the coin was hidden in the Tropical Glasshouse at the Auckland Domain Wintergardens.

Congratulations to Tahlia, Melody, Ashmeeta & Chloe for winning Hunt #4!

Twitter Practice Clues
Here are the answers to the practice clues released on Twitter before the hunt.
» It puts the V in ROYGBIV.
"ROYGBIV" is a way of remembering the colours of the rainbow. Since the "V" is the end of it, the clue refers to Rainbow's End. Well done @CurvaceousDee, you got it first!
» "World" and "Lynn" are interchangeable.
This one was a bit trickier, but you were looking for two phrases that only differed by one word. This clue referred to New World in New Lynn.

Unused Draft Clues
In the hunt writing process, some clues get scrapped because they didn't fit in with the rest, were too vague, too difficult, or for other reasons. Here are some clues that didn't make the cut:
» One thousand kilograms of lines, bars, and pies.
This is a bit of wordplay. It's a 'ton of graphs', or 'graph ton'. The answer is Grafton.
» Luckily, if I injure myself here, I won't have to travel far. 10 minutes at the most.
Auckland Hospital is only a 10 minute walk from the coin.
» ♪ "How **** to ** thy ***** (******), **** East ** Western ***!" ♪

These are some lyrics with words taken out to make it a bit harder to identify. The lyrics are taken from the Canadian National Anthem, the word in brackets is "domain", referring to Auckland Domain.

Upcoming Hunts
It's time for me to take a break from hosting hunts in Auckland for a bit.
The next hunt is taking place in April, and this time I'm going back to where I started, Wellington! Maybe the weather will be much better?
So, if you have any friends in Wellington, get them to follow @hunt_clues on Twitter for the latest announcements!

So long for now.
