Hunt #10 Debrief - Wellington

Midwinter Expedition
Hunt #10 Debrief - Wellington
Coin found on 18 July 2015, at 1:35pm by Tony

It was a rainy weekend afternoon in Wellington, and I still can't pick the right date for the weather down here! Regardless, we had a winner!
Initially I was a bit worried, as there was another scavenger hunt lasting the whole weekend as part of Armageddon Expo at the same time, although with a substantial cash prize.
There was some excitement as some teams raced past where we were having lunch, but eventually our waiting paid off as one hunter stalked every last tree for a good half hour or so, before finding the coin! And just as we had ordered more fries...

This was the very first hunt co-hosted by our newest huntmasters! Introducing, Hunt Team Trinity!

After an agonising wait hanging out with the Pigmy Marmosets, excitement quickly built as we saw someone looking for something that could only have been the coin! A short wander down to the bus shelter soon saw us pulling out our best acting skills when we were almost sprung! A few minutes later we were delighted when Tony had the coin in hand, and we could finally stop pretending that we had no idea where this mystery coin was hidden.
Until next time!-Hunt Team Trinity

There were a few troubles trying to start at 10am on Saturday; I had lost my bus card! Oops...
So to make up for the late start at 11, we released the first three clues, all at once.

*Spoiler Alert*
Answers have been hidden inside a grey background. To read them, simply highlight the text with your cursor... like that.

The Clues - Solutions and Explanations
#TheHuntWLG Clue 1 » The place of X × 152. It marks the west edge of today's search zone.
And yes, I managed to count them. The Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park has 152 crosses all around it.
#TheHuntWLG Clue 2 » I'm new in town... come find me!
This clue is a play on Newtown.
#TheHuntWLG Clue 3 » Classic joke! What did 0 say to 8?
Punchline: "Nice belt!".
Okay, so maybe that joke's more for the kids, but the clue refers to the Town Belt, a large, forest-like area all around the city.
#TheHuntWLG Clue 4 » Stick around overnight and if you're Luckie, you'll hear the Gibbons in the morning.
One of the parks that immediately borders is Martin Luckie Park.
Also, the nearby Wellington Zoo has some noisy gibbons that essentially act as their alarm clock in the morning. If you do an overnight stay, you'll find out!
#TheHuntWLG Clue 5 » Today's hiding place: ow.ly/i/bSYT2
The good ol' Clue 5 picture clue! No technical difficulties uploading it this time!
#TheHuntWLG Clue 6 » Emoji Clue!
It's been brought up that some emoji do not render correctly on some apps and platforms. We will look into this for the future.
Here's how you translate the emoji clue: "There's a place with elephants, tigers, bears (Wellington Zoo), and a soccer field where you can run around in circles (Newtown Park and Athletics Track). Where the buses turn, there's a child's play area. It's in a tree."
The emoji clues aren't supposed to be translated word-for-word, but hopefully they give you a good idea of the coin's location!
#TheHuntWLG Clue 7 » Our first 'national game' was here in 1882.
The first representative NZ Rugby team played their first game at Newtown Park in 1882.
#TheHuntWLG Clue 8 » Buckle your seatbelt; there's trolley buses turning around this tree!
There's no explanation for this one, really. You're looking for a tree that trolley buses turn around.

Unpublished Clues
#TheHuntWLG Clue 9 » From the bus shelter with these symbols, look beyond the power box. http://ow.ly/i/bT2ni
This clue was giving directions to the exact tree on the roundabout it was hidden on. The bus stop is #7923.

Answer - The Coin's Location
As always, the final clue will always tell you exactly where the coin is. For this hunt, the coin was hidden on a roundabout near Newtown Park Playground.

Congratulations to Tony for finding the coin first, and in the rain!

Unused Clues
In the hunt writing process, some clues get scrapped because they didn't fit in with the rest, were too vague, too difficult, or for other reasons. Here are the clues that didn't make the cut:
» The place we call home. http://ow.ly/i/bT0sM
We've cropped the Wellington United Football Club logo to just include the eagle and part of the diamond, this football club is based at Newtown Park.
» Along the number 23, you can park and play with me.
The number 23 is the bus route which runs in this area, and the sign for the nearby park says "Newtown Park and Play".
» Take a load off and you'll find the coin.
There's some cool seats by the playground/bus stop/zoo, and we originally thought it would make a cool hiding spot. We decided to change it to the tree in case someone sat down and accidentally found the coin (see Hunt #7). We wanted to make sure someone found the coin on purpose!

Upcoming Hunts
Remember, we're in Christchurch this Saturday, and Palmerston North the following Tuesday!
If you're following @hunt_clues on Twitter you'll be among the first to know what I'm up to, and if a hunt is happening in your area! So let your friends know too, if they're in these cities!

And a special thanks to Hunt Team Trinity, who will be organising some more hunts in the Wellington area in September and October! Stay tuned for more on that!

So long for now.
